Taking advantage of Cebu’s position as the "education center" in Southern
Philippines, as well as its growing attractiveness to lure foreign students, the
University of Cebu (UC) has invested P179 million for the expansion of its two
school facilities in Metro Cebu.
UC President Augusto Go said the UC Banilad Campus is currently undergoing
construction for the expansion of its building facility, which costs around P90
million.
Its Mandaue campus also has expanded its facility to accommodate the growing
number of enrollees, the cost of the construction will incur the company around
P89 million.
Despite his diversified investments, Go said he is directing his focus on the
education business, not only because of its big potential but because he just
have the heart to help Filipino students, especially regional residents in
Southern Philippines, to acquire professional diplomas and improve their way of
life.
Aside from nursing, Go said UC is also expanding the accommodation of the
English language (crash) courses, to serve the growing demand for English
Language course especially from Korean nationals.
Incidentally, Go is the Consul of Korea to Cebu.  He said UC is going to
capitalize on this demand of providing English courses to the non-English
speaking nationalities who would want to learn English in the Philippines.
He said big number of Korean nationals is now enrolling at UC to acquire an
English course.  He also mentioned that a company in China has asked him to
provide training course for Chinese studying nursing course in China, but he
said he refused the offer saying "I don’t want them to compete with
our own nurses"
Go said he will continue to invest for the expansion of UC in the next few
years.  However, he did not clarify if expansion would involve putting
physical presence in other regional areas in Southern Philippines.
UC is one of the fastest growing universities in Cebu.  Previously known
as the Cebu College of Commerce when it opened its doors in 1964, it became the
Cebu Central Colleges in 1972. In 1992, it changed its name and status to the
University of Cebu as a testament of its desire to provide the best education to
the masses.

UC is a member of the Philippine Association of colleges and Universities and
is an accredited institution by the PACU-Commission on Accreditation.  It
is a founding member of the Association of Universities in the Asia and Pacific.
One of the university’s goals is to provide graduates who are equipped with
academic, scientific, technical and vocational knowledge and skills, globally
competitive and responsive to the changing needs and demands of the times and
are professionally and spiritually active participants in the building of their
future.  It also aims to achieve Level II status for all academic programs
by year 2010.
