Formalized by a contract signing last November 22, the University of Cebu Lapulapu-Mandaue (UC-LM) campus and the Norwegian Maritime Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (NMFPI) have entered into an exclusive partnership to train cadets and future seafarers. Under the Norwegian Shipowners Association (NSA) Philippines Cadet Project available at the UC-LM, 300 full scholarships are available for deserving students who wish to study Nautical or Marine Engineering. The program will start on June 2008.
A veteran in providing world-sought seafarers, UC will help to fill the manpower requirement of its partner, the NSA by providing the full-scholarships grants. In addition to having full tuition fee grant, free board and lodging, and free books, the scholars can avail of 10-12 months shipboard training aboard international-plying NSA vessels by their third year in maritime study, with a monthly allowance of at least $450.
The NSA has a total of 1,774 ships, 60 of which are mobile offshore units. The Association’s vessels sail with a mixture of over 60 nationalities. Forty percent or 24,000 of the 60,000 seafarers manning the ships and rigs are Filipinos.
