UC Scores a Grandslam
A rare board exams milestone was achieved by three UC Main Mechanical Engineering graduates, automatically writing their names into the university’s prestigious list of achievers.
In the April 25 and 26, 2009 M.E. Board Examinations, Eng’r. Joseph T. Mayormita grabbed the top slot with an average of 88.65%. Eng’r. Iron D. Plando, came in a close 2nd place, garnering 88.40%; while Eng’r. Jacinto H. Fajardo Jr. got 87.85% to lock in at 4th place.
The newly-minted topnotchers, their mentors and the university administration were greatly elated. UC President Atty. Augusto W. Go said that this is a re-affirmation of his vision to provide a better tomorrow through quality education to those with less in life. Mayormita’s father is a driver, Plando’s father is a fisherman and Fajardo’s father is a teacher newly promoted as a principal.
But the feat was not totally a surprise. The three were consistent inners in local and national quiz owls since their freshman years. UC spent a princely sum by sending them to compete with the best and the brightest. In fact, they were the grand champion in the Mechanical Engineering Student National Quiz Contest during the 56th Annual National Convention at Manila Hotel on October 29, 2008 and at UP Manila on November 6, 2008.
Because of the glory they have given to UC, Eng’r. Plando received P100,000 cash; Engr. Fajardo took home P50,000 cash reward; and, Eng’r Mayormita was the proud owner of a brand-new silver Toyota Vios.
For the record, Mayormita is the 4th topnotcher to receive the school’s symbolic car gift. Earlier recipients were Atty. Al-shwaid Ismael (2006 Bar Topnotcher), Atty. Christian Llido (2007 Bar Topnotcher), and Albert Barliso (Customs Board Topnotcher).
Aside from the prizes, several benefits come with being at the top. As Eng’r Mayormita pointed out, “Ang work na maoy muduol namo.” As of press time, they were scheduled for an interview at LEXMARK, but they had to postpone because of the press conference in UC-Banilad. The company rescheduled the interview.
The faculty who was instrumental in this grandslam was also duly recognized. Not one but two teachers were given cash incentives. Eng’r. Rodel T. Naval and Eng’r. Ronnie S. Alcorcon received P100,000 each. Dean Eng’r. Nila Sabal of the College of Allied Engineering said that she was expecting that, based on the pre-board exam, at least one would land at the top. Well, three landed bigtime.
The secret to their success could boil down to a few things. Hopefully, aspiring students will heed their words. Eng’r. Mayormita said one has to believe in oneself. Eng’r. Plando believed in determination, sacrifice and seeking help from God.
Eng’r. Fajardo put it more bluntly, "Kung kaya man gani namo, naa pu’y posibilidad nga makaya pud ninyo. Kung mo-aim ka, high na"
