The NSA scholars in UCLM had their hands full this summer with a series of trainings and seminars to enhance their skills. According to Ms. Judith Almonte, NSA Coordinator, the training started with a teambuilding activity from March 22 to April 4. From April 13 to the last week of May, the Engine and Deck cadets had a separate series of seminars.

The Engine cadets had trainings in the following areas: Basic Marine Electrical System, Engineering System and Electro-Technology; Engine Watchkeeping; and Basic Diesel Engine Technology. On the other hand, the Deck cadets had trainings in Basic Stability and Trim; Voyage Planning with Chart Work; Radar, Automatic Radar and Plotting Aids (ARPA); Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS); Steering and Helm; and Deckwatch Keeping.

The highlight of the summer training was the ship familiarization. Five sections of deck and engine cadets went to Subic Bay , Olongapo, Pampanga and went aboard three international vessels last April 24 to May 5, 2009. The ships were Hoegh Fleet Services vessels—car ships that could carry a maximum of 7,000 cars each. The cadets toured the ships and had the chance to see and operate some of the equipment. Moreover, they also had Deck Operations and Engine Operations Training with speakers from the Norwegian Training Center-Manila (NTC-M).

E/C Mark Laurence Sarigumba found the Subic experience challenging, especially that it was his first time to enter a real engine room. D/C Angela Tan described it as exciting and challenging since it was also her first time to go to Subic and go on board an international ship. The cadets were accompanied by 2M Rafael Querikiol, Deck Academic Coordinator; Eng’r. Beteliano Villalas, Engine Academic Coordinator; and Mr. Nelson Opon, Senior Dorm Master.
