UC–BANILAD NURSING STUDENT ASSISTS IN EMERGENCY CHILDBIRTH IN SAN FERNANDO, CEBU

October 2, 2026. An unexpected childbirth unfolded Friday morning in Skina Campaog, Upper Volta, Pitalo, San Fernando, Cebu, when a woman went into labor inside a vehicle at around 7 to 8 a.m. Angel was asleep at home when her mother woke her up and informed her that the woman was giving birth inside the vehicle outside their gate. With medical assistance yet to arrive, Angel Quinanola, a nursing student, stepped in to assist the mother, drawing on the skills and knowledge gained through her nursing studies, according to a Facebook post by MC Quiñanola.Fortunately, Angel had her CHN (Community Health Nursing) bag at home, equipped with basic materials she could use in the emergency. Upon assessing the newborn, she immediately provided stimulation to encourage the baby to cry. After the baby responded, she proceeded with the available umbilical cord care and advised the family to proceed to the hospital for proper assessment, monitoring, and continued medical care.Reflecting on the experience, Angel shared, “Despite the pressure, I tried to remain calm and focused on the immediate needs of the mother and newborn.”In an unexpected moment that called for calm, skill, and compassion, Angel’s response reflected a simple principle at the heart of nursing: when there is a need to serve, a nurse-in-training answers the call.
